Costa Rica is the most amazing tropical country in Central America. After having traveled extensively throughout Central America, I ended up moving to Costa Rica three years ago now. I couldn’t be happier with my move and every year, friends pour down to visit me in paradise. One of the most common questions that my friends ask is “When is the best time of year to visit Costa Rica?” Costa Rica is actually beautiful at all times of the year but when you are planning your next trip to the Blue Surf Sanctuary in Santa Teresa, you should consider the two very different seasons in Costa Rica and what type weather you would like to experience on your vacation.

By far the most popular time to travel to Costa Rica is from the beginning of December until the end of April. This is considered the high tourist season in Costa Rica as thousands of snowbirds descend on the beautiful beaches of Santa Teresa. These months happen to coincide with the dry season in Costa Rica. What does the dry season mean? For the most part, the dry season is a gorgeous time of year in Costa Rica. It is called the dry season because it does not rain in Costa Rica from December through April. Every day, starts with clear blue skies and the days are all bright and sunny. This means that it is a great time to travel throughout Costa Rica especially if you are coming from a much colder climate. In my opinion, the best months to visit Costa Rica in the dry season are December, January and February. As the dry season wears onto March and April, the tropical coast of Costa Rica becomes extremely hot and dry. Temperatures and humidity rises over the dry season making March and April the two hottest months in Costa Rica. In terms of surf, the waves are small and fun at this time of year. The waves tend to be waist to head high and this is a great time to come to Costa Rica to learn to surf or to improve your surfing skills.

In May, the rains come back to Costa Rica and the rainy season begins. The rainy season in Costa Rica runs from the beginning of May until the end of November. If you like warm weather but you don’t like it scorching hot, this is the best time of year to visit Costa Rica. Actually, this time of year is actually my favorite time of year in Santa Teresa. May can be fairly rainy but for the most part, the rains come at night. The days are overcast with still some sunny days in between. The jungle is lush and full of life as the rain brings renewed growth to the area around us. There tends to be less rain in June, July and August but like May, days can be overcast making it quite pleasant. The beaches as well as the surf are less busy as there tends to be less tourists in town. September and October are the two rainiest months in Costa Rica so expect to need a rain jacket if you are coming at this time of year. In terms of surf, the waves are bigger throughout the rainy season. Also, depending on the weather, some days are glassy all day while others are stormy. This time of year is great for those who are learning to surf as well as more experienced surfers. If the waves in Santa Teresa get too big, there are plenty of point breaks around the peninsula with longer, smaller and waves that are more fun and less intimidating.
