Traveling to Costa Rica – What to Pack

So you finally booked your ticket and your traveling to Costa Rica and now you are wondering what you should pack. Well I wanted to share a few things I have learned over the years and tips of traveling back and forth internationally or domestically within Costa Rica. While traveling internationally to Costa Rica many airlines will allow you to bring two pieces of luggage weighing up to 50 pounds each. Although you are able to bring a total weight of 100 pounds, each bag cannot exceed 50 pounds or you will be subjected to a large fee. If you find that one of your pieces of luggage weighs more than the other repack your bag so the weight is distributed evenly otherwise you will receive a hefty fine ranging anywhere between $70-$200. That’s a big chunk of change that you could be using for tours, dinner or drinks throughout your vacation.

When traveling to Costa Rica, if you are renting a car at the San Jose airport then you have a little more freedom with your luggage, If you are catching a domestic flight within Costa Rica via Sansa or Nature Air there are a few size and weight restrictions to keep in mind. Depending on the fare class you purchased Nature air allows you to bring anywhere between 15-40 pounds of luggage. If your luggage exceeds the weight allotted  there will be an additional charge. For all you surfers out there nature air allows you to bring boards on the flight for an additional charge  however they only allow boards 6’6 or under. If you are a die hard long boarder and are determined to test your longboard out on the some epic Costa Rican waves nature air will allow you to travel with a longboard but you will have to buy 3 additional seat tickets to make space for your board. Please check http://www.natureair.com/baggage-allowances.aspx for up to date luggage restrictions. If you are flying with Sansa they will allow you to bring up to 30 pounds depending on your fare class. Sansa will allow you to travel with boards 6’7 or under for an additional fee of $30 each way.Sansa does not allow boards over 6’7 ft simply because there isn’t any space for them.  please check Sansa’s website for up to date information
