Playa Carmen Costa-Rica

Where in the world is… Playa Carmen? Often lumped in with the town of Santa Teresa in Costa Rica, Playa Carmen is actually the lively town that is sandwiched between Mal País and Santa Teresa in the southern region of the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica. Playa Carmen, and in fact this whole region that runs from Santa Teresa to Mal Pais, is a new and thriving travel destination in Costa Rica for surfers, beach lovers and world travelers alike.

Playa Carmen, just a short distance from Blue Surf Sanctuary, originally became known for its picture-perfect, consistent waves that were great for all levels of surfers. In recent years however, Playa Carmen has morphed into something much more than just your ordinary surfing beach. Every year, more and more adventure seekers, food lovers and nature enthusiasts are coming to visit this quaint little Costa Rican coastal town. The people here are so friendly, warm and vibrant. The town itself centers around its only road, a rutted-out dirt causeway and once  you enter, you may never want to leave.

Playa Carmen (The beach, not the town)

Playa Carmen has beautiful, wide-open beaches that brush up against one of Costa Rica’s most lush and active jungles. The jungle here hugs the coastline making it a great place for a picnic or an afternoon at the beach where the whole family can tuck away under the shade of some hidden hideaway. The ocean and the jungle in Playa Carmen are both awe-inspiring and very much alive with much natural wildlife making every day here unique and an absolute joy. The town of Playa Carmen is also colored with many different restaurants that reflect the towns multicultural inhabitants as they showcase many different ethnicities and flavors from all over the world. Don’t forget to look up when you’re in Playa Carmen because hidden way up in the lush hills are many quaint boutique hotels and vacation rentals that overlook the town.

Sounds pretty nice, doesn’t it? Whether you are looking for a surf vacation or just something different and off the beaten track in Costa Rica, Playa Carmen is the place. For surfers, there are surf hotels, surf camps, surf schools and surf shops. For everyone else, there are plenty of fun activities, hotels and restaurants for every budget. There are also many mouth-watering bakeries, top of line tasty restaurants, revered Yoga retreats, spectacular sunsets and a happening nightlife.
