Every day here in Santa Teresa, our lives and the lives of our wonderful guests are filled with nature. We wake up to the sounds of beautiful exotic birds chirping in the trees as well as the many monkeys that live nearby. Throughout the day, the Our Hotel in Santa Teresa Costa Rica is visited by a myriad of local wildlife including iguanas, curious birds, red squirrels, insects, local dogs and so much more. The nights bring with them their own special sounds as the crickets, crabs, beetles and all the other nocturnal crawlers forage in the night. We are never bored here at the Blue Surf Sanctuary in Santa Teresa and we delight in all the nature the surrounds us here in Costa Rica every day.
Here is a short list of some of the most common creatures that you can expect to see during your next stay at the Blue Surf Sanctuary Hotel in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica:
Howler Monkeys – The Howler Monkeys in Costa Rica are among the noisiest animal in the world. Some of our first-time guests at the hotel are a little startled the first time that they hear the Howler Monkey’s calls in the mornings and early evenings. Not to worry tho… Howler Monkeys are 100% vegetarian and they travel through the Costa Rican canopy, hardly ever stepping foot on the ground.

White-throated Magpie Jays – these birds are frequently seen around the Blue Surf Sanctuary Hotel and they are absolutely beautiful. Seemingly very similar in appearance to the North American blue jay, these Santa Teresa birds have extremely varied calls.

Butterflies of all varieties – Costa Rica is home to over 1,500 species of butterflies. They fly around the Blue Surf Sanctuary Hotel all year long but expect to see many more during the rainy season, from the months of June to November.

Geckos, lizards, black iguana and green iguanas – These amazing reptiles are always hanging around our pool or climbing trees on the property at the Blue Surf Sanctuary Hotel in Santa Teresa. Be sure to keep your eyes open and you won’t miss them.

Some of the other commonly seen animals around the Blue Surf Sanctuary Hotel include the red squirrel, leaf-cutting ants, the Marine Toad, land crabs and many colourful and harmless beetles and spiders. Many different species of birds often also visit us to take a drink from the pool. Some of the most common birds include humming birds, the Great Kiskadee bird, the Rufous-naped Wren, the Orange-fronted Parakeet, the the Great-tailed Grackle bird, sandpiper birds and if you’re lucky, even owls sleep the days away in our trees.
