Santa Teresa Beach

Imagine the most picturesque and unspoiled white sand beach that you can where the coastline is lined with layer upon layer of unspoiled jungle, palm trees and coconut groves. You can hear the sounds of wild birds chirping and squirrels playing in the trees behind you. White-faced monkeys (capuchin monkeys) are swinging in the trees. A howler monkey’s enormous yell echoes in the distance. The stunning and powerful ocean roars in front of you and it stretches out in all directions as far as the eye can see. Welcome to Santa Teresa beach. This once sleepy beach escape is one of the most beautiful beaches in Costa Rica and it is just waiting to be explored by you and your whole family. Santa Teresa beach is near the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula of Costa Rica and although, it’s a little hard to get to, it is most definitely worth the trip.

Santa Teresa Beach

Santa Teresa beach is a 5-km expanse of beach where the jungle hugs the coastline. Although the town of Santa Teresa has grown significantly over the past ten years, local building laws have forbidden any beach construction and high-rise buildings leaving this Costa Rican paradise untouched and unspoiled. From the Blue Surf Sanctuary Hotel in Santa Teresa, you can walk either south or north to explore miles of coastline in paradise.

 

Santa Teresa beach is alive with action in the mornings. From sun-up until about high noon, Santa Teresa beach is a haven for sports enthusiasts and beach lovers alike. Sun tanners can be seen strewn up and down the beach. Families and their young children play games and build sandcastles while trying to out-race the rising tides. Joggers and walkers make the most of the early morning cooler hours while surfers flood to the beach to take advantage of the early morning glassy ocean conditions.

Mid-day is a little quieter on Santa Teresa beach but it is actually a great place to escape some of that mid-afternoon heat. The beach here offers plenty of shady hideaways where you can haul up with a book and enjoy the cool on-shore breeze. My favourite time of the day is the sunset hour at Santa Teresa beach, which seems to be one of the busiest times on the beach. It is as if everyone in town has the same idea and they all flood to the beach to meet friends, gather and to enjoy Santa Teresa’s spectacular sunsets. As the sun dips down over the horizon, sometimes a cheer and some claps can even be heard as another perfect day at Santa Teresa beach comes to a close.
